Process

Typical phases of THE design process

Key Note:

After several years in the design industry, working in both consulting and in-house roles, I've created this information to explain the proven process in design innovation & product development for people with a non-design background. This outlines the key stages but does not cover every activity that might occur in a project. Each project is unique and follows an iterative approach. Some projects might focus on just a few specific phases, while others might involve more phases or repeat certain steps, depending on the complexity and challenges of the problem.

01

Discover

Understand the problem - See the bigger picture. Uncover priorities, define the right 'thing' to create by blending design thinking and business strategy. Connect the dots between the company's mission and design within the context of the rapidly changing technological and cultural landscape.

02

Define

Align and define. Work with multidisciplinary teams to reveal patterns, research & insights about people, market trends and the competitor landscape that provide key design & value drivers. Develop a strong point of view, and accurately frame the problem.

03

Design

Set design direction. Integrate insights, cultural elements, narrative, and feasibility to craft design stories, USP's or value propositions that resonate across the business to gain impact. Important to foster a creative culture that encourages innovative thinking.

04

Develop

Prototype and iterate the experience. Leveraging new mediums to bring ideas to life and test with people. Tell powerful stories that resonate across the business to gain impact for either hardware, software, hybrid or brand, meeting the demands of today’s landscape.

05

Deliver

Push design vision and maintain intent. Participate in design critiques and provide coaching to teams focusing our collective efforts to maintain the vision, to project end.
