Forging Blood & Organ Donation Advocacy

Overview

"This app will be used as both a learning and marketing tool to build our user base".

An early stage blood & organ donation company, enlisted me to develop their first version of an engagement app for their volunteers and advocates. The app aimed to empower on-the-ground staff to track their individual contributions of raising awareness within the black community, share activities on social media, and get remote access to training resources.

The challenge was to design the app in a way that helped the founder demonstrate business growth metrics to investors to secure additional funding and partnerships, while also capturing contact data from new signups, or advocates. Below are the designs for the app's primary screens, user flow, and placeholder visual language.

Outcome

• Creation of a new blood and donation volunteer digital app

• The design received positive feedback, bringing the company one step closer to market. However, high development costs surpassed the initial investment funds received, necessitating a pause in development.

• Hi-fidelity prototype to secure further investment

What I did

• Led a range of interviews, workshops & activities with company stakeholders including; card sorting, look and feel explorations, Information Architecture, UX strategy & wireframing, and creation of a high fidelity clickable prototype

• Led the team through the product design phases

• Prototyped key interactions and experiences of app vision

Working directly with the users

The broader product needed to develop a digital network where information can be shared in a fast and effective way using data and technology to equip the founder with better organisation overview of growth percentages, and individual insight of volunteers (Advocates) activities, in undertaking, number of new sign-ups and initiatives.

I created a variety of personas based on conversations with people in the organization fulfilling each role. Each user had a different journey, and some pain points were highlighted in their flow. After I defined the set of personas, highlighted their journeys, I led a card sorting exercise to align on key app features to establish the product flow. I then created a set of wireframes matching each criteria and representing the advocacy app flow.

Key App Features for Advocates (Volunteers)

Quick sign up — App users should be able to log in and sign up new volunteers via email, or an account on social media.
Profiles — They should give access to take a photo to prove sign up, history of achievements and message community for training
Projects — A really good application gives access to all the trainings and projects available, with the ability to select your interests.
Trainings — They are the core of the organisation's growth, training advocates on new policies, government initiatives and any loyalty programs.
Messaging — As a community focused app, a sense of collaboration and support is needed - building a tribe of people with similar interests.
Notifications — They are sent for confirmation of sign-ups and as reminders for any untaken training.

First set of wireframes reflecting the user journey through week one

For speed and simplicity, signing up new advocates was pared down to just simply collecting an email and name for company owners to follow up, minimizing resistance.

The profile focus was to incentivize and motivate volunteers to see the number of sign-ups and achievements, and a messaging feature to communicate with members.

Using Adobe XD I created wireframe prototypes that matched all the product specifications and agreed flow charts. A placeholder visual language was used for the final presentation, to aid non-design stakeholders in better visualizing the end experience and for guerilla user testing. It was presented and signed off by the client with a few iterations and ready for the developer team to implement their magic.
